Canada's Polaris Music Prize Long List Announced

This is exciting. I don’t envy the judges this year. They'll have their work cut out for them with the caliber of this talent pool to choose from.

THE POLARIS MUSIC PRIZE 2008 LONG LIST.

The Long List consists of the top 40 full-length Canadian records released from June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2008, selected by the 180 members of the Polaris Music Prize jury.

The Polaris Jury will now vote from the Long List to determine the 10 album Short List, which will be revealed July 7 at the Drake Hotel in Toronto.

That is one very long long-list! I'd be voting for Holy Fuck, the New Pornos, Weakerthans, or Wintersleep, personally, but only because I haven't heard all of Basia Bulat's album.

I'd like to know where Sunset Rubdown is in this list? It had to be said. As for nailing down a choice, I'm never very good and picking favorites - just too damn difficult with such great talents.

Excellent choices there Barbara. The Holy Fuck cd is a great one. The New Pornographers and Weakerthans close contenders. (At least in my books.)

Very astute Serah... Sunset Rubdown was CLEARLY missed on this one. Their record is a great one, although I am partial their previous release. I was hoping the Montreal band Torngat would also make the list. It's a fantastic release in its own right.

As for me, I am hoping for Basia or Ottawa's The Acorn. Either way there is a lot of talent represented on the list and it should be interesting.

I have heard of exactly two bands on here. Must be pretty exclusive stuff up there in Canada.

Crystal Castles for sure. Their cd is amazing and my favourite cd this year so far.

Care to hazard any guesses as to who the finalists will be?
